This is a story of a native girl being saved by the white man. Flown to the UK, the Western world can feel good about itself as they save the native woman from the savage men of her home nation. It is a historic racist narrative that has been institutionalised. Journalists and politicians were falling over themselves to report and comment on the case. The story of an innocent brown child that was shot by savages for demanding an education and along comes the knight in shining armour to save her.
The actions of the West, the bombings, the occupations the wars all seem justified now, “see, we told you, this is why we intervene to save the natives.”
I don’t trust any Westerners with their supposed concern for her when they are the very same that advocate time and again for violence, imperialism and wars in the same and similar regions.
You don’t get to claim the plight of this girl just to celebrate a) your values as liberal societies that don’t stop girls from going to school and b) your decisions as a war-mongering front to attack her and people like her under the pretense of saving her. I’m not here for the imperialist West trying to celebrate its own existence by selectively giving voice to her, and silencing the parts of her that are inconvenient (her Marxist views, for example?).
On Tuesday 2nd October local Khalil shop owner Abed Sider and his 3-year-old niece were hospitalised after being assaulted by several soldiers.
On the day of his birthday at 6:30pm, Abed had his home invaded by five Israeli soldiers who had come to interrogate his three year old niece on allegations of stone throwing. The Israeli forces dragged Abed from his home into the street; this aggressive action caused injury to his arm which later necessitated hospital treatment. Additionally the Israeli soldiers injured Abed’s three-year-old niece who also required hospitalisation.
The soldiers alleged that nearby illegal settlers from Beit Hadassah had made several complaints of stone throwing from the little girls’ bedroom window that overlooks the settlement playground. The window in question is sealed and caged to protect the Sider family from the constant attacks from the settlers
An Israeli commander later came to the Sider family home and was convinced by Abed’s brother, Shadi, to view footage of the incident that showed the soldier’s aggressive actions. After viewing the video, the commander stated that the soldiers had been acting “out of accordance” with Israeli army policy and that they will be reprimanded and moved to a new post out of Hebron.
This is another incident in a long line of harassment and intimidation that Abed has had to endure; his seven-year-old son was recently blinded by an acid attack from settlers, and is in Jordan awaiting surgery to restore his vision. The Israeli government has refused Abed and his family the necessary travel permits to visit their son and pay for the treatment.
If you thought Israel was above interrogating and injuring a three year old child intentionally, you are mistaken. Israel regularly arrests (900 in 2012 alone) and imprisons Palestinian children (even American citizens) and even sexually abuses and assaults them. Palestinian children are regularly kidnapped, killed, Injured, maimed, and handicapped as a result of israeli aggression all the time without backlash and often the IDF soldiers are praised for eliminating “future terrorists” while the victims are consistently blamed. This enables Israeli soldiers to feel invincible enough to post pictures of their aggression to social networks, one guy thought it was acceptable to instagram a shot of a Palestinian child in his crosshairs.
This is Israel.
